How Does an Anua Septic Tank Work?
A septic tank is a separation system, where the clarified effluent is discharged:
- Raw sewage enters the first stage of the tank where solids settle by gravity to the bottom of the tank
- Sludge levels reduce within this stage with the aid of naturally occurring anaerobic digestion
- The flow passes upwards through further baffle arrangements providing further clarification
- The settled effluent is displaced from the tank by the incoming sewage flow
- The partially treated effluent then flows into the percolation area or other suitable filter bed system.
- Sludges built up in the base of the septic tank are emptied annually to ensure continued efficient running
Basic septic tanks only partially treat sewage and discharge effluent of a low quality. A septic tank may not be suitable for your site if:
- Soil condition is poor
- There is close proximity to a watercourse
- Other building regulation factors impede the use of a septic tank.
